This famous American writer of children’s fiction has sold over 91 million copies of her books worldwide and has created some of the finest characters such as Henry Huggins and his dog Ribsy, Ramona and Beezus Quimby and Ralph S. Mouse. She is none other than the living legend Beverly Cleary.

Beverly Atlee Bunn was born on Apr 12, 1916 in McMinnville Oregon. Her mother was a school teacher and her father was a farmer. The place where Beverly lived had no library. Knowing Beverly’s interests towards books, Beverly’s mother made some arrangement with the state Library in order to get books regularly for her daughter.

When Beverly was six years old, the family moved to Portland, Oregon. In Portland, Beverly got the oppurtunity to read many books with the help of the school librarian. Teachers were easily able to find out Beverly’s writing talent. One teacher even suggested her to become a children’s writer.

After completing Bachelor’s Degree in English, Beverly started to work as a children’s librarian. When she found that children lack books to read, Beverly thought of reviving her dream of becoming a writer. From 1942, Beverly began to write full – time for children. She married Clarence Cleary and moved to California and the couple were blessed with twins.

Beverly’s very first book, ‘Henry Huggins’ was a huge success. The book is a reflection of Beverly’s own childhood, her friends from neighbourhood and also the children that she met as librarian. Other works such as ‘Ramona the Pest’, The Mouse and the Motorcycle’ and ‘Ramona and her Father’ was also widely received by her fans. All her books have been published in more than 25 languages.

Beverly has won huge list of awards for her continuous contribution to children’s literature. Fans from all over the world celebrated Beverly’s 100th birthday last year. Beverly was honoured with the National Medal of Arts for her lifetime contribution to American Literature. Not only her kid fans but readers from all walks of life pray for her health and her continuous work.
